Back in 1985, it was all pretty simple, rope tows, raw terrain, and a whole lot of potential. What started as a small operation in a big alpine bowl has grown into the mountain we know today, without losing the character that made it special in the first place.

It all started back in 1985

The early years

A true icon, The Remarkables / Kawarau Maunga form the dramatic backdrop to Queenstown. Known for their striking, jagged ridge lines, they’re one of only two mountain ranges in the world that run true north to south. The Remarkables Ski Area sits high in an open alpine bowl at the tip of the range, delivering big views and a uniquely open feel.

What began with a handle tow, three fixed-grip quad chairlifts, and plenty of untamed terrain has evolved into something much bigger. Today, The Remarkables, known simply as Remarks, offers modern facilities, expansive terrain, and a reputation as a world-class ski area, while still holding onto the character that made it special in the first place.

From a top-tier learners’ area where grandparents can watch from the café deck to wide green runs, flowing intermediates, and steeper chutes beyond, The Remarkables offers freedom at every level. However you ride, there’s space here to find your own version of it.

Something for everyone

Steep, high, and surprisingly accessible, The Remarkables has earned a global reputation as a place where skiers and riders push progression. Home to Freeride World Tour Academy programmes, qualifying events, Remarks Parks and a strong local community, it’s a mountain built for progression at every level.
