28 August – 3 September 2026 | Alta Chutes & Shadow Basin

The North Face Frontier returns to The Remarkables for another week of world-class freeride action. As part of the Freeride World Qualifier circuit, the 2* and 4* events attract elite skiers and snowboarders from New Zealand and around the globe, all chasing valuable qualifying points and a pathway to the Freeride World Tour. The competition runs within a weather window from 28 August to 3 September, with the 2* event taking place in Shadow Basin before moving to the iconic Alta Chutes for the 4* competition.

Spectators can ride Alta Chair and hike into the viewing area to witness some of the most technical skiing and snowboarding in the Southern Hemisphere. Watch as athletes charge near-vertical terrain, navigate narrow chutes and send impressive rock drops, all while choosing their own unique line down the mountain.

About Freeride

Freeride is all about creativity, control and commitment. Unlike traditional ski racing, there is no marked course—each athlete chooses their own line down a natural, ungroomed face, linking together technical turns, cliffs, cornices and natural features. Competitors are judged on five key elements: line choice, fluidity, control, technique, and air & style, making every run completely unique.

The North Face

The North Face Frontier changed names over the years, evolving from its NZ Freeski Open roots — but one thing stayed remarkably constant. For almost the entire ride, The North Face has been there too. Through changing eras, changing formats, changing snow conditions and generations of athletes, the partnership endured. Friends pushing the boundaries together and showing the world that free spirit and world-class performance can happily ride the same chairlift.
